This is a continuation of the themes in “Media Art 1” from Fall 2011 but can of course be taken by new students who have similar experience or knowledge.
Through practical and theoretical experiments students will gain an appreciation and critical perspective toward art that uses technology often described as “media art.” Our focus will be digital technologies, discussed with a view to history as well as its contemporary ubiquity. These technologies will act as a framework for practical experimentation towards a final “media art” project. We will go “behind the scenes” of the popular approach to digital technologies to unearth a critical narrative, where we appropriate the technology to our own needs.
Where in the first course we focused on the history of media art and the foundations of its aesthetics, in this course we will look more to contemporary concerns about technology and representation.
The class will comprise of workshops and seminars with topics such as the concepts of programming, critical discussions regarding media and the economy, glitch aesthetics, and more. We will highlight how to structure ideas with the awareness that contemporary digital tools have an influence on the user.
The course will be examined by the production of several exercises and a production of an art work that can be done in groups or individual.
